After completing the initial mix and editing phase of “Hammer In My Hands,” I move into production expansion, where the record begins to shift from a structured mix into a more detailed and dimensional final production.

One important carryover from the previous stage is that I choose not to use Beat Detective. Since the groove already feels natural and cohesive from the live tracking, I avoid forcing additional rhythmic correction. That decision directly influences how I approach this stage — I focus on enhancing the natural feel of the performance rather than tightening it further.

I begin adding additional guitar layers to expand the sonic space of the track. This includes ambient and textural parts, including Ebow-driven guitar lines that help sustain energy and create movement underneath the main performance rather than overpowering it.

These overdubs are recorded using a combination of a Shure SM57 and a Sennheiser MD 609. The SM57 provides a focused midrange presence that helps the guitars cut through the dense rock arrangement, while the 609 captures a more open, detailed high-frequency response. Blending both microphones allows me to build a wider, more dimensional guitar tone that still sits naturally within the live foundation of the track.

Alongside the guitar work, I also go back into the vocal sessions and edit final vocal performances. This includes refining phrasing, tightening timing where necessary, and ensuring the vocal performance sits emotionally in line with the expanded instrumentation.

The focus in this stage is not adding density for the sake of fullness, but reinforcing the existing energy of the performance. Every overdub is intentional and serves a specific emotional or structural purpose.

By the end of this stage, “Hammer In My Hands” evolves from a clean structural mix into a more fully realized production, with expanded atmosphere, refined vocal performance, and added depth — while still maintaining the raw live identity established in tracking.
