“Hammer In My Hands” (First Mix / Rough Mix Stage)
The first mix stage of “Hammer In My Hands” begins after the initial tracking sessions with Orange Animal are completed.
At this point, I am working with full live band recordings captured in a performance-driven environment. The goal is to begin shaping the raw sessions into a structured mix while still preserving the energy of the live performance.
I start with the essential editing workflow before moving into mixing decisions:
Comping: I go through multiple takes of vocals and key instrumental parts and build composite performances from the strongest sections. This allows me to preserve emotional moments while maintaining consistency across the track.
Alignment: After comping, I tighten timing across instruments where necessary, ensuring rhythmic elements feel locked without removing the natural feel of the live recording.
Beat Detective (Evaluation Stage): I initially attempt to use Beat Detective-style editing on the drum and rhythmic foundation to tighten timing inconsistencies. However, after going through the process, I determine that it is not necessary for this recording. The natural groove and performance interaction already feel cohesive, and forcing additional quantization would reduce the live energy of the track.
Once the editing phase is complete, I move into the first true mix pass.
In this stage, I focus on:
establishing static levels for all instruments
balancing drums, bass, guitars, and vocals
setting initial EQ decisions to reduce masking
creating early stereo placement and depth
applying minimal processing to preserve live dynamics
Because the recording is based on a full-band live performance, there is natural bleed and interaction between tracks. Instead of treating this as a problem, I work with it as part of the sonic character of the record.
The biggest challenge in this stage is balancing clarity with energy — making the mix feel controlled without flattening what made the performance work in the first place.
By the end of this stage, “Hammer In My Hands” has a clear structural identity and a stable mix foundation that supports further production development and refinement.
