“Piano Song” (Production Expansion)

Production for this track was extremely intentional. Every added layer had to serve emotional progression rather than complexity for its own sake.

We built the arrangement around gradual emotional development, using:

  • harmonic layering to support the core piano structure

  • ambient textures to expand depth and space

  • dynamic build sections to shape emotional movement over time

In the final production stage, I recorded additional elements to complete the record. This included final vocal takes as well as four additional guitar parts, including a newly developed lead guitar line that helped carry melodic movement throughout the song.

The guitars were tracked using a Shure SM57 and a Sennheiser MD 609. The 57 gave a focused midrange presence that helped anchor the guitars in the mix, while the 609 captured a more open and detailed top end. Blending both microphones allowed me to shape a wider and more dimensional guitar texture in the final production.

This was also one of the more challenging songs in the entire capstone process for me personally. Compared to “Hammer In My Hands,” this track required a much slower and more controlled creative approach. I had to spend more time making decisions about restraint, space, and emotional pacing rather than energy or density.

There were moments where progress felt slower than I wanted, especially when trying to decide what not to add. That became one of the biggest lessons in this song — understanding that holding back can sometimes be more difficult than building up.

Nothing was added unless it directly supported the emotional direction of the song, and that process required a lot more patience and revision than I initially expected.
